American Union Electrician looking to move to NSW/QLD with family: need advice on finding work & housing.?

We were initially looking near Brisbane, but are open to other areas as well. We will probably visit on a Working Holiday next year to help narrow things down. Any opinions/advice on your Electrical Unions would be appreciated, as they seem a lot different from ours. We are concerned about health care and in the USA union jobs provide that to their employees.

Thank you kindlyAmerican Union Electrician looking to move to NSW/QLD with family: need advice on finding work %26amp; housing.?
I live in Brisbane and I am an electrician by trade and now teach electrical apprentices at TAFE.

To work for an employer is Australia you need an “electrician’s licence” these are known by various names in the different states. All states are responsible for licensing electricians that want to work in that state.

This is a pain if you live in a border region as you require licences from both states.

If you wish to be self employed you require an “Electrical contractors licence “which, in most states, requires you to do a business course.

To get an Electricians licence in Australia you will have to produce all your documents regarding your training and qualifications.

You will then have to sit a trade test. This test is quite extensive and involves a lot of rule book work as well as practical demonstrations of your testing and safe working skills. These assessments are usually carried out at TAFE and the results issued to the candidate, they can approach the electrical safety office and apply for a licence. Start here

AS you cannot do any electrical work on fixed wireing with out a licence you should apply to the electrical safety office for a permit to work and get a job with an electrical contractor as a supervised electrician, the contractor can then verify your ';hands on'; skills

It all sounds difficult but it’s not too bad.
