An apartment? no. Hotels on the other hand...
Just keep in mind that even a 3 or 4 star hotel room in Rome is VERY very small by American standards, think tiny, maybe 8ft by 20 ft. Of course remember also that you get what you pay for. If you're willing to shell out way more money you will be plenty comfortable. May i STRONGLY recommend the Hotel Borromeo on via Cavour. walking distance to EVERYTHING and only 5 mins walking to the colosseum. Great service and staff
You can try the wonderful website wantedinrome.com and see their classified ads. You might also google the Vatican website and ask about some of their lodgings (they rent out rooms in convents and monasteries that are clean, classy, and safe).
But, having lived in Rome for several years and travelled it many times, the most important advice I can give you is: beware of Gypsies and pickpockets. I can't stress enough how good they are at their craft of thieving and I saw tourists get taken literally every week.
Please don't carry wallets in back or leg pockets. Be safe! And have a wonderful time.
